How to do Nunchaku Wrist Roll in the Martial Arts
How to roll the Nunchaku around the wrist in a continuous motion
Now let’s learn the complete wrist roll. The complete wrist roll is going to come around the wrist like before and when you let go, you’re going to end up in the same position. The only difference now is that we’re going to continue to roll from that reverse grip.
OK, the stick is gonna come around the wrist, just like on the half wrist roll. Spin that hand round, grabbing it reverse grip. From this position you’re gonna swing the stick up and around continuing in the same direction. My thumb stays – it’s gonna roll all the way round my thumb, around the back of my wrist into my hand and then over again. I’m in the same position and I do the exact same motion again and again.
I roll it around my thumb, into my hand and then it flips over.
Note: I’m opening and closing my hand and the sticks are rotating around that thumb. Just keep it a nice, fluid motion. Once again, from the reverse grip position, the bottom stick’s going to swing up and around. Notice the thumb stays in place on the stick and it rolls right around that thumb, around the back of the hand and into your hand. The other stick will then spin around.
Because we’re doing this in a fluid motion we are opening and closing the hand. When you rotate the nunchaku stick around that thumb, it helps you control the movement. By keeping the thumb really close to that stick you can feel how it spins around that thumb and the other stick into the hand and back around. When you’re practicing this, focus on the feeling you get with the stick and that thumb. Getting the complete wrist roll is going to take some time. It’s gonna take a lot of practice. You’ll probably drop the sticks a lot also. That’s OK. Have some patience, keep practicing and eventually you’ll get it.
